Meenakshi Amman Temple

The 1600 years old Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, an exquisite example of aesthetic construction is centrally situated in Madurai at a sprawling 17 Acres Complex. This heritage temple consists of fourteen towers and five important entrances with a golden lotus flower tank at the centre. The dance of Nataraja in the silver royal court is a special feature here. 1000 Pillar Mandapam

Ayiram Kaal Mandapam or the 1000 pillars hall (985 pillars to be exact). Built in AD 1569 during the beginning of the Nayak Dynasty. Naicker Palace

About 1.5 Kms from the Meenakshi temple, this palace was built in 1636 by the ruler whose name it bears. The imposing edifice is famous for the “Stuccowork” on its domes and impressive arches. The Sorgavilasam (Celestial Pavilion), measuring 75m x 52m, constructed entirely of brick and mortar without the support of a single rafter or girder, is a marvel of indo-Saracenic architectural style. There’s daily sound and light show in English and in Tamil.


Gandhi Museum

Gandhi Memorial Museum, established in 1959, is a memorial museum for Gandhi located in the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India. Known as Gandhi Museum, it is now one of the five Gandhi Sanghralayas (Gandhi Museums) in the country. It includes a part of the blood-stained garment worn by Gandhi when he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Also can be seen are a gallery of relics, Khadi and village industries section and South Indian Handicrafts section.


Teppakulam

Mariamman Teppakulam is a beautiful square tank spread over a huge area of almost 16 acres, located about 5Kms East of Meenakshi Temple. The tank is the scene of the colourful float festival held in January/February to celebrate the birth anniversary of King Thirumalai Nayak, who built this tank. The deities of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are placed in a float, called “Teppam”, decorated with flowers and illuminated with hundred of lights.


Tiruparankundram

Thiruparankundram temple is dedicated to the Lord Subramaniya. It is situated 8km south from Madurai district. Thiruparankundram is one of the six abodes of Lord Subramaniya. This is cave temple, One of the sangam poet Nakkirar has sung a log poem about this Temple is called Thirumurugatrupadai. Devayanai Marriage, Thirumalai Nayak and Mangammal Sculptures are there in this temple. The most important sculputure is Lord siva with flag of Rishaba in his hand cannot be found anywhere else.


Alagar Temple

Alagarkovil, a village situated very near Madurai at the foot of the range of hills called Alagarmalai, is famous for its ancient . Vaishnavite temple, and the beauty of exquisite sculptures in the hall and other 'mandapams' of the temple. The Alwars have sung in praise of the deity of the place and the hills. In addition, Nakkirar, the Tamil poet has composed several popular poems about this deity. As the place itself suggests, the temple is dedicated to Alagar who is popularly known as Sundararajar.


Pazhamuthircholai

Pazhamutircolai is situated 19 kilometres from the temple town of Madurai. The place is full of natural beauty and sylvan surroundings. This hill is also known as Vrishabhadri or Idabagiri. At the foot of the hill is situated Azhakar Kovil, which is one among the 108 divyadesams sanctified by the hymns of Azhwars sung in praise of the Vishnu enshrined in this temple. Atop the hill Lord Muruga stands majestically in the temple as the Lord of the Hills popularly known as Kurinji Nilakkizhavan in Tamil.


St Mary's Church

This old Cathedral stands very impressively amongst the Madurai streets and traffic. A look inside will show the Tourists its massive european design and architecture. The church is well maintained, and Tourists can spend a quiet moment admiring the place. There is a statue on the vigin dressed in an indian saree. No footwear allowed inside the church. A quick walk from the Thiruvalai Naykar palace. The Church is around two centuries old but very well maintained.


Goripalayam Darga

Goripalayam Dargah was built in 13th century and is the largest mosque in Madurai. The dargah encompasses graves of two Muslim saints and rulers of Madurai. The saints, Hazrat Sulthan Alauddin Badusha (Radiyallah) and Hazrat Sulthan Shamsuddin Badusha (Radiyallah), belonged to Oman. Located on the northern bank of the River Vaigai, it was believed to be built by Thirumalai Nayak. The remarkable feature about the dargah is that it has two tombs along with a dome.


Samanar Caves

Samanar Hill is of historical significance and lies opposite to Nagamalai. Samanars or Tamil Jains were believed to have stayed on this hill because they were afraid of harassment carried out by the monarch of Madurai. There are several stone statues and many other object d'art present in Nagamalai. Samanar hill is largely composed of granite. In the interior part of the hill are numerous caves. It is a vital archeological site and home for countless insectivorous bats of 9 species.

The water theme park, Athisayam is located about 12kms from Madurai near Samayanallur, on Madurai - Dindigul road. The park, sprawling over 40 acres of land with more than 40 games offers a thrilling experience to the visitors. The park has two sections; i.e water park and dry park. The water rides in the park include Entrance Shower, Big Splash, Crazy River Slide, Wave Pool, Water Trumpolin etc and the dry park has rides such as tora tora, jumping frog, kids lazy river, baby train, caterpillar, cup and saucer etc.
